Forget the typical K-pop debut. This new girl group was created by an electronics company — and all five members are real people.
LG Electronics has officially launched AI-DOL, a five-member girl group created and produced directly by the Korean tech giant.
Rather than being formed by a traditional entertainment agency, AI-DOL was designed by LG Electronics as part of a marketing campaign for its AI WashCombo all-in-one washer-dryer.
And now, the unusual K-pop project is moving beyond advertising and onto actual Korean music shows.
Meet AI-DOL, LG’s Real-Life Girl Group
The group consists of five members: Iyeon, Moa, Sunghyun, Heejae and Sua.
Despite the name “AI-DOL,” which initially led some people to assume the group was virtual or AI-generated, all five members are real people.
LG Electronics reportedly selected members with previous idol experience or backgrounds as debut-team trainees to give the group a more authentic performance and stage presence.
The members have also been given distinct personalities and roles:
- Iyeon — an all-rounder with a powerful, queen-like presence
- Moa — a mysterious perfectionist
- Sunghyun — a girl-crush performer with intense choreography
- Heejae — the group’s refreshing visual
- Sua — the warm and caring member who looks after the others
But there is another interesting twist.
Each member represents a different feature of LG’s AI WashCombo.
The five concepts include all-in-one large capacity, AI Time Sensing, AI washing and drying, minimalist flat design and Mini Wash.
From Advertisement to “Rookie” K-Pop Group
LG Electronics did not introduce AI-DOL as a conventional commercial campaign.
Instead, the company created an entertainment-style debut strategy.
Teaser videos began building curiosity in July, followed by choreography challenges featuring celebrities in August.
The group’s identity was finally revealed through an advertising video at the end of August.
Then came the surprising next step: music shows.
AI-DOL appeared on Mnet’s “M Countdown” on September 17 and MBC’s “Show! Music Core” on September 19, presenting themselves as a new girl group rather than simply appearing in a traditional commercial.
They are also scheduled to appear on ENA’s “K-Pop Up Chart Show” on September 29.
Interviews with popular YouTube channels and magazines are expected to follow next month.
“I WASH” Is Becoming a Real K-Pop Release
AI-DOL’s debut song is called “I WASH.”
Starting September 22, the track became available across more than 50 music and social media platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Melon, FLO and VIBE.
The song will also become an additional LG UP appliance end-of-cycle sound next month.
Through the LG ThinQ app, users will be able to download the “I WASH” sound and set it as the ending sound on compatible LG washing machines.
So yes — you could potentially finish your laundry and hear an AI-DOL song.
The K-Pop Marketing Experiment Is Already Going Viral
The campaign began attracting attention even before the group’s official debut.
According to LG Electronics, the “I WASH” audio preview shared through AI-DOL’s official Instagram reached No. 1 among trending Instagram audio last month.
The choreography video also reached No. 4 in Instagram Reels’ popularity rankings.
Celebrities including singer Choi Yena, comedian Lee Sun-min and choreographer Hyojin Choi joined the dance challenge, helping the project spread across Instagram and YouTube.
What started as a product campaign has therefore developed into something closer to a genuine entertainment project.
Could AI-DOL Build an Actual Fanbase?
LG Electronics says the response to the initial teaser videos was stronger than expected, leading the company to expand the group’s activities and promotional period.
If AI-DOL develops a real fanbase, LG Electronics is even considering offline events for fans.
That would take the project another step beyond traditional advertising.
Instead of simply showing a washing machine in a commercial, LG is essentially building an entertainment universe around the product — complete with members, personalities, music, choreography and fan content.
KOREA FBI Editor’s Comment
Okay, this is probably one of the most unexpected “K-pop debuts” we’ve seen. 😂
A washing machine company creating a five-member girl group sounds like a joke at first.
But LG Electronics actually went surprisingly far with AI-DOL.
They have real members, a debut song, choreography, music-show appearances, social media challenges and even individual member personalities.
And I think that’s what makes this campaign interesting.
K-pop is no longer just about entertainment companies. Brands are increasingly using the language of K-pop — fandom, music, choreography, characters and storytelling — to communicate with younger consumers.
The really interesting question now is whether people will remember AI-DOL because of the washing machine…
or start following AI-DOL because they actually like the group.
If the second one happens, LG may have created something much bigger than an ordinary advertising campaign.
