K-Pop Pioneer Returns with New Artist Lineup, AI Fan Platform, and Cutting-Edge 4DGS Technology
Lee Soo-man, the legendary founder of SM Entertainment and one of the most influential figures in K-pop, has made a high-profile comeback with two new idol groups under A2O Entertainment: girl group A2O LIT and boy group A2O SOUL.
On October 12, Lee introduced the two groups at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, marking a major milestone in his return to the Korean music industry after a three-year non-compete period.
“I am Lee Soo-man, key producer of A2O,” he said, introducing himself under a new professional title.
From SM Entertainment to a New K-Pop Era
Lee sold all his SM Entertainment shares to HYBE in February 2023 for approximately 520 billion won and subsequently stepped away from domestic music production and entertainment business activities under a non-compete agreement.
After pursuing projects in markets including China and the United States, Lee is now returning with a new strategy that combines idol production, advanced visual technology, and artificial intelligence.
His latest venture reflects an ambition to move beyond conventional music production and build an integrated entertainment ecosystem for the next generation of global fans.
4DGS Technology Takes Center Stage
One of the biggest highlights of Lee’s presentation was 4D Gaussian Splatting (4DGS), a technology featured in the music videos of his new artists.
The system captures performances using multiple cameras and reconstructs the footage within a three-dimensional digital environment, allowing viewers to experience dynamic perspectives reminiscent of the iconic bullet-time sequences in The Matrix.
Lee explained that his previous experience using Matrix-style camera systems for artists such as Girls’ Generation, SHINee, TVXQ, and BoA helped inspire the development of this new approach in collaboration with Samsung Electronics.
He described the technology as one of the most advanced stages in the evolution of cameras as recording devices.
The company is also preparing to launch Blooming Talk, an AI-powered fan engagement platform, alongside interactive live talk shows. Scheduled for release in late October, the platform is designed to let fans interact with AI chatbots modeled on the appearances and voices of A2O artists.
A2O LIT and A2O SOUL Unveil Their Debut Songs
The showcase featured a futuristic stage decorated with silver trees and mysterious sculptures, reflecting A2O’s fictional universe known as the A2O Cosmic Epic (ACE).
The nine-member girl group A2O LIT performed its debut track, “NEON,” followed by the 15-member boy group A2O SOUL, which introduced its new song, “SUPERSTAR.”
Both groups feature multinational teenage members from countries including South Korea, Japan, China, and Thailand. The youngest members are just 13 years old.
Their music retains recognizable elements of Lee’s signature production style, including intricate a cappella harmonies and futuristic Auto-Tune effects.
Composer and songwriter Yoo Young-jin, a longtime creative collaborator of Lee and a key figure behind hits such as H.O.T.’s “Warrior’s Descendant” and aespa’s “Next Level,” led the songwriting and composition of both tracks.
Yoo moved to A2O Entertainment after Lee’s departure from SM Entertainment, continuing a creative partnership that helped shape some of K-pop’s most recognizable sounds.
The A2O Rookies System and Zalpa Pop
A2O is also developing its own trainee development system, A2O Rookies, building on the pre-debut exposure strategy previously used by SM Rookies.
Sunny, formerly of Girls’ Generation, has participated in training the new artists, extending another connection to Lee’s SM Entertainment legacy.
The name A2O stands for “Alpha to Omega,” while Lee has promoted Zalpa Pop—music aimed at Generation Z and Generation Alpha—as the company’s defining direction.
In 2024, during his non-compete period, Lee also introduced A2O MAY, a five-member girl group composed entirely of Chinese members, to the Chinese market.
With A2O LIT and A2O SOUL, he is now seeking to expand that strategy into the broader international K-pop market.
Korea FBI Comment
Lee Soo-man’s return represents more than the debut of two new idol groups. It signals an attempt to redefine the K-pop business model by combining artist development, immersive visual production, and AI-driven fan engagement.
His established production legacy provides A2O with a recognizable creative identity, while 4DGS technology and AI interaction platforms suggest a more technology-centered approach to the global entertainment market.
However, the long-term success of this strategy will depend on more than technological innovation. Music quality, artist identity, audience loyalty, and the ability to build sustainable international fandoms will ultimately determine whether A2O can establish itself as a major force in the next generation of K-pop.
For the global music industry, the key question is whether Lee Soo-man can translate his experience from the SM Entertainment era into a new entertainment model designed for Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences.
