Netflix has officially confirmed a sequel to the global hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters, a K-culture–packed blockbuster that captivated audiences worldwide with its unique blend of K-pop, fantasy, and Korean storytelling.

According to the streaming giant Netflix, the sequel will reunite the original creative team, including directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who have signed a multi-year animation partnership to develop the next chapter of the franchise.

While Netflix did not reveal a release date, the project is currently in the early stages of production.

A Global Hit Built on K-Pop and Korean Culture

The original film follows a fictional K-pop girl group called Huntrix, who secretly battle evil spirits threatening the world while performing as global pop stars.

What made the movie stand out was its deep integration of Korean culture.
Throughout the story, viewers encounter familiar elements of everyday Korean life — including bathhouses, traditional medicine clinics, gimbap, and convenience-store cup ramen.

This blend of K-pop fantasy and authentic Korean lifestyle helped the film resonate with both global fans and Korean audiences.

Record-Breaking Success on Netflix

Since its release in June last year, the film has achieved massive global success.

Key milestones include:

  • More than 500 million cumulative views worldwide
  • Surpassing the streaming performance of Squid Game to become one of Netflix’s most successful titles
  • The original soundtrack “Golden” reaching No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100

The film also dominated major award ceremonies.

At the Golden Globe Awards, it won both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
It later secured additional honors at the Critics Choice Awards, including Best Animated Feature.

In February, the soundtrack made history at the Grammy Awards, winning Best Song Written for Visual Media, marking a landmark moment for the K-pop genre.

“This Is Only the Beginning”

Director Maggie Kang expressed pride in the global response to Korean storytelling.

“As a Korean filmmaker, I feel tremendous pride that audiences want to see more Korean stories and characters,” she said.
“This is only the beginning. There’s still so much more to show in the world we created.”

Her comments suggest that the K-Pop Demon Hunters universe may expand far beyond a single sequel, potentially growing into a larger global animation franchise.

Why the Sequel Matters for K-Culture

The success of the film highlights how K-culture is evolving beyond music and dramas into global animation franchises.

With K-pop, Korean food, and everyday cultural elements embedded into the storyline, the film became a powerful showcase of Korea’s cultural identity for international audiences.

The upcoming sequel is expected to push this global K-culture momentum even further.

KOREA FBI Editor’s Comment

K-pop once dominated global music charts. Then K-dramas conquered streaming platforms.

Now, K-animation is emerging as the next frontier of the Korean Wave.

If the sequel builds on the success of K-Pop Demon Hunters, it could mark the beginning of a new global era where Korean-inspired animated universes compete with Hollywood franchises.

And for global fans of K-culture, this is only the beginning.
