Disney is taking a closer look at K-pop and Korean culture, and global fans could soon see some seriously exciting collaborations.
The Walt Disney Company Korea, also known as Disney Korea, is expanding partnerships with Korean companies as part of its global IP strategy. The goal is to combine Disney’s iconic characters and franchises with popular Korean content — including K-pop, K-beauty, K-fashion and K-food — and create new retail experiences and merchandise for fans around the world.
Disney Korea Reveals Its 2027 Franchise Strategy
Disney Korea held its “Franchise Showcase 2027” in Seoul on September 16, introducing its plans for expanding Disney IP-based products and partnerships.
It was also the first time that Disney Korea’s Consumer Products team publicly presented its business direction through a showcase hosted by the Korean branch.
Disney has traditionally focused heavily on B2B licensing, but the company is now strengthening its direct-to-consumer retail business as well.
Recent examples include a Toy Story 5-themed pop-up store at Hyundai Department Store and an Olive Young N Seongsu showroom inspired by “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”
Disney’s global retail business is already enormous, operating across around 180 countries with an estimated scale of approximately 87 trillion won ($63 billion).
Why K-Pop Is a Perfect Match for Disney
K-pop is particularly interesting for Disney because its global fandom is already highly engaged with characters, fashion, collectibles and limited-edition merchandise.
Disney Korea has previously collaborated with PEACEMINUSONE, the fashion brand created by BIGBANG’s G-Dragon, on a Toy Story-inspired merchandise collection.
Now, Disney Korea appears ready to expand this strategy beyond individual collaborations and build longer-term partnerships with major Korean entertainment companies.
The company has partnered with Kakao Entertainment through a K-culture fund, with plans to develop around 10 projects over the medium to long term. Specific investment details have not been disclosed.
Disney Korea has also worked with SM Entertainment since 2020, including collaborations involving Disney-branded products and merchandise development.
New collaborations with HYBE and Starship Entertainment are also expected.
K-Pop, K-Beauty, K-Fashion and K-Food Could Go Global Together
Kim Hyun-jin, a senior executive in Disney Korea’s Consumer Products business, emphasized the potential of Korean brands across multiple industries.
She explained that Korean brands leading industries such as K-pop, K-beauty, K-fashion and K-food fit closely with Disney’s “cross-border” strategy.
The idea is simple but powerful: take Korean brands that already have strong popularity at home, combine them with globally recognized Disney IP, and create products that can travel across borders.
Disney also sees its global fan community as an important part of this strategy. Its D23 fan community, which has millions of members worldwide, could provide another channel for introducing Korean collaborations to Disney fans overseas.
For K-pop fans, that could mean more than just a cute character printed on an album or T-shirt.
From fashion collections and accessories to limited-edition character goods and pop-up experiences, K-pop × Disney has plenty of room to grow.
KOREA FBI Editor’s Comment
This is a collaboration to watch.
K-pop already has one of the most passionate global fanbases, while Disney has decades of iconic characters and franchises that fans love to collect. Put the two together, and the potential for limited-edition K-pop merchandise is huge.
And the interesting part is that Disney Korea isn’t stopping at K-pop.
If K-beauty, K-fashion and K-food are added to the mix, we could see a much bigger K-culture × Disney ecosystem coming to life.
For global fans who love both Korean culture and Disney, the next wave of collaboration goods could be seriously hard to resist.
